cairnsconnect mobile utilizes WAP (Wirless Application Protocol) technology to deliver local information services to mobile phone users in Australia and overseas.

Currently cairnsconnect mobile offers access to the following content:

  • Local Weather
  • Local Time
  • News
  • Driving Times
  • Important Telephone Numbers
  • World Time Zones

Over the next couple of months we will be working to both improve these services and bring new services online.

Wireless Access Protocol enables mobile phones equipped with the appropriate microbrowser to access Web pages coded using WML (Wireless Mark Up Language) from the public Internet. The Wireless Application Protocol is a secure specification that allows users to access information instantly via handheld wireless devices such as mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smartphones and communicators. Although WAP supports HTML and XML, the WML language (an XML application) is specifically devised for small screens and one-hand navigation without a keyboard. WML is scalable from two-line text displays up through graphic screens found on items such as smart phones and communicators.

1. Get a WAP enabled handset / device
To view cairnsconnect mobile content you will need a WAP-enabled device such as a mobile phone. Some current mobile phones supporting WAP include the Ericsson R320, Nokia 7110, Motorola L Series +, Siemens S35i, and many more.

2. Connect to a carrier that supports access
Currently only Telstra, Vodafone, Optus and OneTel offer WAP services to their customers. However, within this service the carrier has the ability to decide what WAP content you can access. cairnsconnect mobile is a free service, however it is up to your carrier to "permit" you to access it. Only Telstra, and Vodafone allow their customers to view any wap enabled site they wish, including cairnsconnect mobile.

3. Bookmark cairnsconnect mobile
If you have the phone and the right carrier, you just need to add a bookmark on your phone to the cairnsconnect mobile service which is located at:

(note: this url will not work in your web browser :-)

Refer to your handset / device manual for detailed instructions on visiting and bookmarking wap pages.
